Understanding Decimal Hours for Payroll
Payroll systems multiply hours by an hourly rate, so time must be converted from clock format to decimal. For example, 7 hours and 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours, because 30 minutes is 0.5 of an hour.
To convert minutes to a decimal, divide by 60: 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.50, 45 minutes = 0.75.
Overtime typically applies to hours worked beyond a standard threshold (often 8 hours per day or 40 per week) and is paid at a higher rate, commonly 1.5× the regular rate ("time and a half").
